Raw water is delivered to the mine, as well as to a water refinement plant on the farm Zeeland, by the 700mm diameter Hans Strijdom pipeline.

Operating primarily underground, the Durban Roodepoort Deep Mine commenced production in 1898 and was considered to be a medium-sized mining operation. The mine consists of two separate underground workings, with a single known shaft. The maximum subsurface depth of the mine reaches an impressive 2,400 meters (7,874 feet).
