tree milling machine forum uk

I saw some Tree milling machines in use in a machine shop years ago. They looked to be built a bit heavier than a Bridgeport. The shop owner told me they were a more rigid, better mill than a Bridgeport. Downside: I think Tree has ceased making these mills. Parts may be harder to come by than for the Bridgeport.

Suspected that Blank & Buxton Company was based at 3100 East Michigan Avenue, Jackson, in Michigan and was a distributor and not a manufacturer. Millers branded Blank & Buxton appear to have been by al INDEX, a company also in Jackson. There is a good description of many other milling machines on this web site as well.

I recently acquired a nice Tree milling machine. I've yet to get it all wired up as I need to get a voltage issue figured out. It currently has a 1-phase motor on it, but it came with an extra 3-phase. Since all my other machines are 3-phase, I figured I'd go ahead and change out the motors. Well, the 3-phase motor only runs at 440V.

I used to use a Tree milling head mounted to a different brand mill. The Tree collet is an acorn shape with iirc a max capacity of 3/4". The quill has a built-in collet closer which locks the tool via the downfeed lever. Very clever design and a pleasure to use. No drawbar to tighten or knock-out. Very fine milling machines if you get a good one.

These are good machines but parts are a little less easy to find. I certainly can recommend 3S in Oak Creek WI - info can be found at the link above. These are ex-Tree guys who bought out the machine shop and special machines, parts and equipment in 2001 and currently supply part, spindle rebuilds, and other services. Bob
